7 Secrets to Steal From a Home Stager
As a leader in the local home stager industry, Tamara Grant has helped may winning realtors from Keller Williams, St. Jean Realty and the Remax Golfi Team sell their houses.
From decluttering to rearranging, Grant shares some easy, cost-free tips for revamping your home before you list it.
1. Mix up your surfaces.
"To freshen up the look of your home," Grant says, "remove all of your accessories and books from bookshelves, consoles, and coffee tables, and give each piece a new home." Bonus: "Moving things around a bit will even help you declutter and visually start to create a new space," she says.
2. Aim to make a visual impact.
Add playful style to your home by color-coding your bookshelves. "Group books together by the color of their spines to create a dramatic effect on your shelves," Grant explains. "Color-blocked books can be almost as striking and powerful just as a great piece of art. Colour is an emotional trigger."
3. Skip the florist.
"Sometimes a few blossoming branches in a glass vase with water can be just as striking as an expensive bouquet from the florist," Grant says. “Artificial flowers are ever lasting so it works out best while your home is on the market. You don’t have to worry about refreshing water or giving it proper sunshine.”
4. Clear off counters.
Your bathroom should look like it's in a spa or a resort. Grant recommends a “clean sweep” unless you have a few decorative boxes but keep it to a minimum. No toiletries or Kleenex boxes!
5. Style your coffee table.
"Start with something eye catching in the middle," Grant says. "Try a huge bowl filled with something interesting or colourful. Then build out from that – stacks of art books, candles, sculpture, or pottery. Make it interesting and regularly change it."
6. Elevate your curtains.
If you want to elongate your ceilings, a major selling point, Grant suggests this as it creates an illusion of a taller ceiling or larger windows," Grant explains, "hang curtains from as high up as possible."
7. Create a bedroom seating area.
Have an extra table and chair? Move it from your living room to your master bedroom. "To give the impression that a room is larger, put an upholstered chair and a side table in a corner. It'll give the impression that the room is larger." Remember, bigger is always better
